ClubHack 2007
Posted by Ameya on December 9th, 2007 filed in Events, SecurityClubHack 2007 the India’s own Hackers convention organized by Rohit Sriwastava was held at Pune a.k.a IT Hub of India. My experience at ClubHack was very nice. As per my knowledge this was the very first IT Security and hacking based event organized in India covering the Legal aspects of it.
I got Indrayani Express to go to Pune and reached there exactly on time. Nishit got there few minutes before me and was already standing in the queue for getting the I-Card and other stuff. I joined him and got registered at the venue. The registration followed by a quick breakfast and we got back to the Introduction talk by Rohit.
The first talk I attended was of Sunil Arora about “ Backdoor 2.0: Hacking one’s Firefox to steal his web secrets”. First impression creates a very deep impact on the one’s mind. Sunil started a very good session on the FF hack followed by the demonstration of an actual attack on his own browser. FireFox is being called 1 of the safest Web Browser today which he showed is not.
The next session was in the same conference room by Chetan Gupta about “ Mining Digital Evidence in Microsoft Windows – Answering Who, When, Why and How”. He used some very good Freeware tools with his presentation. The Forensic Analysis on windows was good. Windows is not that bad as we think…. LOL… I got to know many things about the Forensic Exprets view of digging the Crime and which things plays major role in such investigations.
We were then in “Faster PwninG Assured: Cracking Crypto with FPGA” by David Hulton. As I was not much aware of the FPGA and cryptology I planned to move in the other session which was running at the same time in the other conference room. It was “ 7 years of Indian IT act - 7 Best Cases” by Rohas. Rohas was the best Speaker that I liked at the ClubHack. His knowledge, presentation skills and his attitude of looking towards the Cyber Crime and Law was very impressing.
We got the lunch break after Rohas’s session. We personally met Rohas and Chetan in the break and a had nice talk with them. I was feeling little sleepy after the lunch as I had got up very early in morning. We then attended Dror on “Crazy Toaster: Can Home Devices turn against us?” and got a quick coffee break to refresh mind and attend the final panel discussion with Cyber Lawyers, Cyber Cops and The Hackers. This was the most impressive discussion on Cyber Crimes, powerful Indian laws and the security. I cleared many of my doubts which were never cleared by anyone.
The speakers were all best at their knowledge. There were many new things I discovered about security and law. I knew using pirated software or pornography are very serious crimes in India but here I actually got to know how those actually matters. I was feeling sad that I could not attend the Foss.in 2007 but now am little happy that I could attend ClubHack 2007 and learned so many new things.

After thus, coming to know of the futility of firefox as a “secure browser”, I headed off hunting for a safe browser for unix. The following for shortlisted- lynx, w3m, ELinks, Links2, links, dillo, konqueror and epiphany. Both konqueror and epiphany have bloat and are extensible, which might, like
IE and Firefox be compromised at some point. Dillo is best if no SSL, frames or JavaScript is needed. ELinks does everything (SSL, frames, tables, FTP, JS)
except that it is text-mode. Others simply did not work for most sites or simply pale before dillo and Elinks. So, my search is over. Thought folks might find this useful.

Srikant and Kartik: The search for good standard browser for all systems Win / Nix is still on.
lynx: just text based. ppl cant view their attachemnts…
w3m: 1 more only text based.
ELinks: again only text
Links2: This is better than elinks or lynx but only for NIX.
dillo: no ssl. u cant use banking sites not even your gmail.
konqueror: 1 more good but only NIX based browser.
epiphany: Epiphany is better but its only for the NIX systems.
We can choose 1 of these but our friends those are still on WinBox are still on threat.
